Fibermaxxing: the food trend your gut will love

#Fibermaxxing: de voedingstrend waar je darmen blij van worden

After years of protein popping up just about everywhere — from protein bars to protein puddings — another nutrient is finally having its moment: fibre.

The term fibermaxxing is appearing more and more often on social media. But what exactly does it mean? And is it actually a healthy trend, or just the next nutrition buzzword?

What is fibermaxxing?

Fibermaxxing is actually pretty simple: consciously trying to include more fibre in your daily diet. No miracle solution, no strict diet and, thankfully, no complicated plan.

Fibre occurs naturally in plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruit, whole grains, pulses, nuts and seeds. By choosing these foods more often, you automatically increase your fibre intake.

Why are fibers important?

Dietary fibre consists of carbohydrates that are not fully digested in our small intestine. As a result, they reach the large intestine, where they perform several important functions. Fibre contributes to normal bowel function, among other things. Certain types of fibre also serve as a food source for the bacteria in our gut. In recent years, the gut microbiome has attracted increasing scientific attention. After all, our gut affects more than just our digestion.

Are we getting enough fiber?

That’s exactly what makes fibermaxxing such an interesting trend. We don’t all need to obsessively count grams of fibre, but many people could benefit from including more fibre-rich foods in their daily diet. The good news? You don’t need to completely overhaul the way you eat overnight. Add fruit to your breakfast. Choose whole grains more often. Put pulses on the menu. Add nuts and seeds. And take a closer look at the nutritional composition of the products you choose every day for breakfast or as a snack.

Your snack can make a difference too A cookie is still a cookie. And at KarmaKarma, we don’t want to pretend otherwise. But if we’re going to eat snacks anyway, can we create products that are nutritionally better balanced? That’s exactly the idea behind The Better Cookie. The Better Cookie is 100% organic and plant-based, has a Nutri-Score A and contains 15% fibre. Not because fibermaxxing suddenly started trending, but because we’ve believed for a long time that better nutrition isn’t only about making big changes.

It’s also about the small things we eat, day after day. So, should we all start fibermaxxing? Not necessarily. Think of fibermaxxing mainly as a fun reminder to take a look at how many fibre-rich foods make it onto your plate on an average day. And don’t go from zero to a hundred overnight. Suddenly eating a lot more fibre can cause bloating or other digestive discomfort. Increase your fibre intake gradually and make sure you drink enough water. Ultimately, the best food trends may simply be the ones that remind us to pay attention to something very simple. More vegetables. More fruit. More whole grains. More pulses, nuts and seeds. And better choices in between. Fibermaxxing? Maybe it’s simply time fibre finally had its moment.
