Five health benefits of oatmeal

Are oats considered to be a superfood? Superfood is a term used for foods that are exceptionally beneficial to your health.

Not all food is equally beneficial, which is why foods such as blueberries, goji berries, apricots, quinoa or chia are labeled as superfoods. And yes, oats are also a superfood, precisely because they are so different from other grain products. It is a whole grain but also an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Eating oats can lead to weight loss, lower blood sugar, and most importantly, a lower risk of heart disease. Sounds good, but why are oats so healthy?

Read the five main reasons below

1. Oats are very nutritious
It is a good source of carbohydrates and fiber, but also contains more protein and fat than most other grain products. Oats also contain manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and also iron and zinc. These are all important minerals. In addition, oats are also a source of vitamins B1 and B5. Oats contain many good nutrients per calorie intake.

2. Oats satisfy your hunger for a long time
Eating oats gives you a wonderfully saturated feeling and you can continue for a long time. Food that is filling helps you snack less and, as a result, consume fewer additional calories.

3. Oats are high in fiber, including a soluble fiber, beta-glucan
All whole grain cereals are a good source of fiber. And fiber is very important in a balanced diet. Due to our refined diets, many people eat too little fiber. Eating oats can therefore help increase your fiber intake and improve your intestinal function.

Oats - unlike other grains - also contain soluble fiber. These fibers are called beta-glucan. Beta-glucan partially dissolves in water and forms a thick, jelly-like solution in the gut.

4. Oats can lower cholesterol levels
Due to the beta-glucan barrier in the gut, cholesterol is absorbed less, leading to lower LDL and total cholesterol levels in the blood. This has been scientifically established and therefore oats may also use a European-approved nutritional claim.

5. Oats can improve blood sugar control
Oats can lower blood sugar levels, especially in people who are overweight or have type 2 diabetes. It can also improve insulin sensitivity. These effects are mainly attributed to the ability of beta-glucan to form a thick jelly, which causes slower gastric emptying and less rapid absorption of glucose into the blood.
